Spanish practice becomes a different experience when you can speak your answer instead of reaching for the screen. Learn Spanish For Real, the Spanish learning web app I design and build, now brings that experience into Daily Study with Voice Mode.
Avo, LSFR’s avocado companion, reads a prompt, listens for your response, and guides you into the next question. The result is a spoken practice loop that stays connected to your vocabulary, sentence practice, review schedule, and saved progress.
What’s new in LSFR Voice Mode
The October 2026 update gives learners a complete voice-led study flow:
- Avo’s narrated prompts. Hear vocabulary and sentence questions with English and Spanish narration, plus word highlighting that follows the spoken prompt.
- Spoken answers. Respond with the answer itself or its choice number. On-screen choices remain available when you want to tap.
- Continuous study. The Continuous toggle starts on by default and remembers your preference. Avo moves into the next batch until you choose to stop.
- Voice controls. Say “Hold on Avo” to pause, “Okay Avo” to resume, or “Avo, can you repeat that?” to hear the prompt again. “Stop study” ends the session.
- A faster way in. The Dashboard’s “Try Voice Mode!” button opens Daily Study directly in Voice Mode.
- Phrase practice, too. Practice from Phrasebook and Saved Phrases, with improvements to long sessions, feedback, and transitions.
From listening to speaking, without losing your place
The phone above shows real iPhone screen recording footage from LSFR. In the first question, Avo reads “El equipo celebró la ___ con abrazos y lágrimas.” The learner’s answer produces a correct result, and the next sentence follows. The highlighting, listening state, feedback, and progress are visible throughout.
Tap “Hear Avo · Sound on” to restart the short demo with audio. Playback starts muted so you can choose when to listen. Pause and play are available beside the sound button.
Demo note: the original screen recording contained a silent audio track. This edit combines Avo’s existing LSFR narration, the app’s actual listening and success dings, and a distinct synthesized learner voice answering correctly. Narration follows the recorded word highlights. The learner voice is a demonstration, not the original microphone recording.
Hear the language. Answer out loud. Let the next question come to you.
Voice Mode uses the same study and grading system as the rest of the app. Your spoken response becomes an answer in the existing learning flow, so voice practice contributes to the progress you are already building.
A bigger Spanish learning app behind the microphone
Voice Mode joins a growing curriculum and shared review system. As of , the current LSFR catalog includes:
The lessons include 200 Vocabulary lessons, 110 Grammar lessons, and 6 Beginner lessons. Vocabulary lessons pair words and phrases with focused assessments, while the Phrasebook and Saved Phrases give learners useful language to revisit.
Spaced repetition, adaptive quizzes, pronunciation audio, cloud-saved progress, XP, streaks, achievements, and the leaderboard connect those activities. Avo and the illustrated Dashboard give that learning system a sense of place.
These are content catalog counts, checked against the current app files and published bundle. Access to individual lessons and phrase features depends on the learner’s plan.
Making spoken practice more reliable
Building Voice Mode involved more than adding a microphone button. Speech recognition, narration, retries, feedback, and the next question have to hand control to one another without interrupting the learner.
Recent upgrades improve Chrome’s handling of short answers such as “se,” “o,” and “a.” Captured words are preserved when a later recognition result is empty, and unclear captures can prompt another try without being counted as incorrect. The ready cue waits for the microphone to be listening.
The update also improves wrong-answer feedback, Phrasebook sessions, completion, and transitions between continuous batches. Browser recovery messages help learners move to Safari or Chrome when their current browser cannot provide speech recognition.
Voice Mode requires microphone permission and a browser with a working speech-recognition service. Some in-app browsers and desktop Brave configurations do not provide one. Open LSFR in Safari or Chrome if you see a compatibility message.
