I gave Avo a house makeover. Then I added pumpkins. Then ghosts showed up. Somewhere along the way, a twitching skeleton hand became part of the decorating committee.
So yes, the Halloween update got a little out of hand.
But beneath the orange lights is a much bigger update to Learn Spanish For Real: a full graphical overhaul, animated 3D worlds, better hands-free Spanish practice, and seasonal themes with matching Avo costumes. I wanted opening LSFR to feel like arriving somewhere—and studying to feel easier once you got there.
01 / A WORLD WORTH COMING BACK TO
Avo has a new place. You’re invited.
The landing page now opens onto Avo’s jungle home, with textured 3D scenery, animated Avo, and lighting that gives the place some depth. The login experience is cleaner, too: email and password autofill, Google sign-in, account creation, and a compact guest-mode option to try the app.
That visual overhaul carries into the dashboard and study screens, on desktop and mobile. Your progress sits beside a home that grows as you learn. There are 51 house stages across 100 levels, and your earned progress carries through the redesign.
Themes have become places, rather than just different button colors. Avocado Grove, Jade Conservatory, Orchid Garden, Festival Courtyard, Ancient Rainforest, Marigold Hacienda, Indigo Observatory, and Turquoise Coast each bring their own scenery, house finishes, and atmosphere. Halloween and Vampire add two seasonal worlds to that collection.
02 / LESS TAPPING. MORE TALKING.
Your Spanish practice has a voice.
The October 21 update makes Voice Mode a much better study companion. Open Daily Study in Voice Mode, allow microphone access, and say your answers out loud. Keep Continuous on to study until you choose to stop.
The big improvement: your recognized words appear as you speak. The live caption panel shows what LSFR is hearing, with captions refining as recognition becomes clearer. Streaming recognition processes your speech while you’re talking, which cuts down the wait after you finish.
I’ve also upgraded the free, on-device Spanish and English speech recognition, improved quiet-speech capture, and fixed number handling. Tres and trece—3 and 13—deserve to be heard as different answers. That distinction got some very specific attention.
A few things you can say

For a short word, try La palabra es…
before your answer. You can still tap an answer when that’s easier.
There’s less interruption between questions, too. Once the first card appears, study continues without a full loading overlay between cards. Correct-answer popups now show the answer’s 2 or 5 XP separately from a word-mastery bonus.
First-time setup may download speech models. Voice Mode needs microphone permission, and recognition depends on your device, browser, and surroundings. It can still mishear you; the live captions make that easier to spot.
03 / A LITTLE TREAT FOR SHOWING UP
Free Halloween theme.
Mummy Avo. Yours to keep.
Orange house lights, pumpkins, cobwebs, sheet ghosts, spectral green jack-o’-lanterns, and a skeleton hand twitching outside the house. Avo has committed to the season. He’s also wrapped himself in bandages.
Free and paid learners can earn the Halloween theme and Mummy Avo permanently. The opportunity to unlock them is limited to the event window; your earned theme stays on your account afterward.
- Sign in to your LSFR account. Guest practice doesn’t collect the pack.
- Open Daily Study in Voice Mode and answer at least one card. A wrong answer counts as practice, too; skipping doesn’t.
- Complete that practice during October 21–31, 2026, and let your answer sync before the event closes. Then choose your earned Halloween theme from Themes.

Use Daily Study for the event: skips, review retries, lessons, and library/category practice don’t qualify. You can revisit the event details through Themes → Feliz Halloween! Event themes.
For Premium: a darker invitation.
The separate Vampire theme trades the pumpkin glow for gothic cathedral houses, a gloomy forest, maroon stained glass, animated pixel-art blood drips, and periodic dashboard lightning. Vampire Avo appears throughout the experience, including Voice Mode. Apparently, immortality still leaves time for vocabulary.
Premium members collect Vampire by signing in during the same October 21–31 event; upgrading to Premium during the window collects it, too. Once earned, it stays on your account permanently, including after a Premium subscription ends. The deadline is the same: October 31, 2026, at 11:59 PM America/Phoenix.
The free Halloween pack and Premium Vampire theme have separate unlock rules. You don’t need Premium for the Halloween theme, Mummy Avo, or free Voice Mode practice.
And yes, there’s a wardrobe update.
The sprite creator has five new Halloween gear items: a witch hat, pumpkin hat, bat wings, skeleton bow tie, and jack-o’-lantern. They’re regular catalog items available from level 1. I feel a skeleton bow tie is a perfectly reasonable thing to wear to Spanish practice.
04 / A QUICK SPOOKY SPANISH BREAK
Avo’s Halloween Shorts. Press play.
The seasonal silliness continues on the LSFR YouTube channel. Start with a costume, learn a few spooky words, then practice the difference between being scared and describing something scary.
Watch, pause, say it yourself. If you have more time, explore the free Spanish lessons on YouTube, including longer listen-and-repeat sessions. A lesson doesn’t always need a ceremonial block on your calendar.
05 / MAKE A LITTLE SPANISH PART OF YOUR DAY
The best way to learn Spanish for free? Build a habit you enjoy.
That’s the idea behind this update. I want a free language app to give you a reason to return, then make it easy to do something useful when you get there. Avo’s new world makes the invitation. Speaking, listening, and practicing do the work.
Try five minutes: open LSFR, complete a few Daily Study cards, and say your answers out loud. Watch a Halloween Short if you have another minute. Tomorrow, come back for a little more. You don’t have to wait until you feel ready to speak before you start speaking.
I’m Zoey Pike, and that’s what I’m building with Learn Spanish For Real: useful daily practice, a world that grows with you, and an avocado with increasingly ambitious seasonal plans.
A LITTLE PRACTICE. A HAUNTED HOUSE OF POSSIBILITY.
